Turmeric is an herb that is cultivated widely in South and Southeast Asia for its commercial value. Turmeric is derived from the root of the plant, which has been used in the Ayurvedic tradition for centuries for its many healthful properties. Curcumin, the active constituent of Turmeric, (Curcuma longa L.) is the pigment that gives this herb its characteristic yellow color.
Curcumin has more recently been recognized by the modern scientific community because of its impact on human health and consequently has been the subject of many laboratory studies. A large body of research has suggested that Curcumin possesses potent antioxidant activity, as well as the ability to help the body maintain balanced inflammatory responses. Through these and other mechanisms, Curcumin supports colon health, exerts neuroprotective activity, and helps to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system.* Cautions and Interactions Limited studies on animals suggest that turmeric extracts can be toxic to the liver when taken in high doses or for a prolonged period of time. For this reason, turmeric products should probably be avoided by individuals with liver disease and those who take medications that are hard on the liver. Due to curcumins possible stimulating effects on the gallbladder, individuals with gallbladder disease should use curcumin only on the advice of a physician.
Turmeric may affect the body's reaction to NSAIDs, including indomethacin and ibuprofen, as well as to reserpine, a medication used for high blood pressure.* This product is intended for the following protocols: Cellular Immunity, Joint Support and Pain Management. *The statements herein have not been evaluated by the FDA. These products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
