Chromium is an essential mineral found in very low concentrations in the human body. A biologically active form of chromium participates in glucose metabolism by supporting healthy insulin function. Insulin is a vital hormone responsible for transporting glucose inside cells and maintaining proper blood sugar and blood lipid (cholesterol) levels in the body already within the normal range. Therefore, chromium helps insulin metabolize fat, turn protein into muscle and convert sugar into energy. Recent scientific studies indicate that Chromium can also support healthy vascular smooth muscle response to nitric oxide (NO) and acetylcholine (ACh). NO and acetylcholine are compounds that help healthy blood vessels regulate blood flow in response to physical activity, stress, hormonal signals, and other normal daily rhythms.

Cautions and Interactions

Animal studies suggest that antacids, particularly those containing calcium carbonate, may reduce the body's ability to absorb chromium.

Chromium supplements may interact with certain diabetes medications such as insulin, metformin, and sulfonylureas. Carefully monitor blood sugar levels if you are concurrently taking chromium with these medications.Medical supervision in these cases is advised.

Corticosteroids may increase the need for chromium.
