SUGGESTED USAGE: As a dietary supplement, take 1 Vcap® daily, preferably with meals.
 
BENEFITS: Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA) is an antioxidant that is naturally manufactured in the human body. ALA has been called the "universal antioxidant" because of its versatility—it helps deactivate an unusually wide array of cell-damaging free radicals in both water and fat environments. ALA works in conjunction with vitamins C and E and some other antioxidants, "recycling" them and making them much more effective. Beyond its direct antioxidant function, ALA helps to boost glutathione levels. Glutathione possesses its own antioxidant activities and is a critical component in cellular and hepatic detoxification mechanisms. ALA is also necessary for healthy glucose uptake and utilization, thereby helping to support healthy carbohydrate metabolism. In addition, because alpha-lipoic acid can pass easily into the brain, it has protective effects on brain and nerve tissue.*

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a potent antioxidant that plays a critical role in “combating” free radicals, which can damage cells and even speed up the aging process. Because ALA can function in both the water and lipid compartments of the cell, it has been called "the universal antioxidant."
 
In addition, ALA plays a key role in maintaining the body's antioxidant status. Because it has been found to help replenish Vitamin C and glutathione (crucial for cellular and liver detoxification), it is therefore important in the body's ability to remove toxins and waste material safely. ALA also helps to recycle Vitamin E.
 
Finally, ALA helps to promote cellular and muscular energy production by working as a co-enzyme in the metabolism of sugars. ALA is therefore an important nutrient for the support of healthy glucose metabolism.*
 
Cautions and Interactions
 Blood hormone levels and thyroid function tests should be monitored closely in people taking thyroid hormones who are also taking alpha-lipoic acid. Also, because it may affect insulin sensitivity, blood glucose levels should be monitored closely when alpha-lipoic acid supplementation is added to diabetes treatment regimens. In addition, alpha-lipoic acid supplementation may increase the requirement for biotin in humans. Alpha-lipoic acid may affect the body's metabolism of certain medications, including Cisplatin and Cyclophosphamide.
